Machiavellian Dog
I’m pretending I’m walking the dog
when the dog is actually walking me.
The leash is deceptive. The person
holding it not always the one
in power. She knows
how
to lead me while acting like
she’s being led. If I didn’t
know
better, I’d say she had
read Machiavelli. She knows
how to seize power and when
to go in exile. Though she
doesn’t have to go anywhere
to escape the
consequences
of making me look like a fool.
She
just falls into a deep sleep.
When
The Dog Decides
How to Care for Your Dog books
all say you have to be the boss.
That’s what I tell her. But she
wants
to decide what direction
to walk in. I want to go North.
She wants to go South.
We end up going West. I feel
I’ve showed leadership. I didn’t
let her
win. We compromised.
Then I realize we’ve been walking Southwest.
